Now more than ever, people are enrolling in classes at City College. According to the new edition of City Facts (CCNY's resource for statistics about the school), between the fall 2007 and fall 2008 semesters, overall enrollment went up by 6.0% from 14,537 to 15,402 undergraduate and graduate students.

Enrollment in the Division of Humanities and Arts showed significant growth in particular, rising from 1,798 undergraduates in 2007 to 1,949 in 2008 and nearly doubling since 2004. The most recent numbers now represent 17% of the undergraduate student body at CCNY.

"The numbers are definitely higher this year," commented Melissa Oden, a Humanities & Arts academic advisor. Unfortunately, the fall '09 numbers have not yet been released, but most school officials agree that enrollment is rising in virtually all academic areas and levels.

The Office of Institutional Research published the fall '08 edition of City Facts in February of 2009 after compiling and comparing statistics from the incoming class to those from previous years. The statisticians use SAS (Statistical Analysis Software) programs to organize data and create the tables printed in City Facts. The yearly review shows breakdowns of various data regarding topics such as enrollment, graduation rates, and test scores organized by age, race, gender, and others.

"City Facts (CF) is arranged in five- or ten-year periods," explained Ed Silverman, Director of Institutional Research at CCNY. "Not just because that is what fits on a page, but what is readable." The data is often so comprehensive that it is difficult to read beyond a five-year span. Silverman also noted, "CF is available in the library for previous years going back to 1989, so prior information is still available."
