Sunday, October 4, 2009. White and red clothes, white and red flags, even Mayor Mike Bloomberg was wearing white and red! CCNY students were proudly marching on Fifth Avenue carrying a big City College banner. Why? It was the 72nd Annual Polish Pulaski Day Parade! We are Polish students from CCNY representing the CCNY Polish Club!

Poles from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut arrived in a great appearance. Our purple beaver was especially visible against the white and red flags of the thousands of others participants.

Ola, a CCNY student, commented, "We were just great! Making a lot of noise, marching double-proud of being Polish and CCNY students."

The crowd chanted "Polska! Polska! CC! NY! CC! NY! Harlem!" It was so much fun! These events are significant for more than just the fun though. They help raise awareness, promote diversity, and unite thousands of people. It is obvious why all the participants had so much energy giving the ovations, singing, waving and even dancing. It was a way to express our love and respect to Poland. Believe me, the City College banner was carried with special esteem, and our Polish flags were waved joyfully.

The parade was named after Kazimierz Pu?aski, a Polish soldier and politician who was an important figure in the American Revolution. He is famous for this statement written to George Washington, "I came here, where freedom is being defended, to serve it, and to live or die for it." During the war, his actions saved Washington's life.

The Polish Club will meet every other Thursday during club hours at 1 PM in the Hoffman Lounge. If you are interested, Polish or not, please come and join us. It's always very interesting and we are already like a family. It's a great atmosphere! Email us and we'll keep you posted: psa.ccny@gmail.com
